Progressive news site HuffPost plans to lay off 30 editorial writers this year, according to reports.
HuffPost editor-in-chief Daniel C. “I am writing with painful news,” Belton said in the memo. “HuffPost is undergoing a significant round of layoffs due to the ongoing and growing challenges of our business.”
The email was shared with a New York Times media reporter Ben Mullinrevealed that HuffPost is in contact with the HuffPost union about how best to proceed
Offers to staff may include “voluntary buyout packages at some desks in the newsroom.”
“I recognize that this is a disturbing way to start the year, and we will be sure to share more details as quickly and clearly as possible, as I believe it is important to be transparent and share the information we have,” Belton wrote. “In the coming days, we will make available more information about the job eliminations and HuffPost's plans for 2025 and beyond.”
HuffPost's newsroom has about 132 people. With the upcoming job cuts, it will lose about 23 percent of its newsroom staff.
Other major media outlets have cut – or plan to cut – significant portions of their workforces. This week, the Washington Post almost shut down 100 employees across its business divisions – which is 4 percent of its entire workforce.

The cuts follow a rocky year for the paper that saw it lose at least 250,000 subscribers and several prominent Post employees resign after owner Jeff Bezos' decision that The Post will not be supported 2024 presidential candidate.
A CNN employee told Fox News Digital in November that the cable news channel plans to implement Job cuts in MarchWhich they said would be “very meaningful” for the company. “This is a time of complete and utter business model overhaul and disruption. Extremely difficult even under the best of circumstances,” they said.
HuffPost did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
