Hotelplan UK – parent company of Inghams, Explore Worldwide, InTravel and Santa's Lapland – has published its second annual Planet and People Report. The report outlines the group's progress and achievements since the 2023/2024 financial year, as well as the challenges it faces as it continues to become a business that is better for people and the planet.

The group's report follows the release of Explore Worldwide's second objective paper in December 2024. Inghams and Santar Lapland will also publish their own impact reports later this winter.

Joe Ponte, Group CEO of Hotelplan UK, said: “I'm really proud of how we're transforming into a purpose-led business that prioritizes planet and people alongside profit. We have set a clear plan to improve company culture, implement carbon reduction pathways and deliver real value to our supporting community – all while continuing to deliver products and experiences that exceed customer expectations. We're far from perfect, but it's exciting to see how our strategic initiatives are starting to turn the dial on these areas.”

Key Achievements

Between November 2023 and October 2024, Hotelplan UK:

  • Achieved B Corp certification for worldwide exploration
  • Reduced the carbon footprint of their trip per person on a per-night basis for the second year running, resulting in a 10% reduction from baseline.
  • Invested £1.2 million in carbon sequestration and biodiversity restoration
  • Active carbon removal projects have removed more than 20,000 tons of carbon from the atmosphere, sequestering more carbon for future removal.
  • Donated £98,601 to charity projects
  • Launched new recruitment website with inclusion in mind
  • Carbon and biodiversity knowledge is embedded across teams through its new learning experience platform

the challenge

Decarbonizing international transport is a key challenge recognized in the report.

Director of Sustainability Prue Stone commented: “We are starting to build a picture of the carbon emissions avoided last year by switching passengers from planes to trains, but flight-free travel is not practical for every destination or every passenger. Flight emissions account for more than three-quarters of our total footprint and will remain a major focus for 2025.”

Hotelplan UK's latest carbon audit, carried out in November 2024, shows that the group has now reduced its trip intensity carbon footprint by 10% per passenger per night since baseline measurements. The group's absolute footprint, however, grew for the second year running, albeit at a slower rate. The 2024 audit shows a 5% increase in the year, following on from a 42% increase in 2023.

Focus on people

The report highlights how Hotelplan UK continues to integrate its people and planet strategies through a targeted focus on community, wellness, lifestyle choices and education. The group has increased support for communities at home and abroad by introducing a match-funding scheme for employee fundraising and enabling teams to volunteer in local communities.

2024 also saw Hotelplan UK sign a partnership with Working With Cancer to do more to support people through diagnosis, treatment and return to work; And launch new recruitment sites, designed with inclusion in mind Its new learning and development platform, Learn and Maximize Your Potential, offers learning and skill development with sustainability as a key focus.

Nikki Lyle, HR Director at Hotelplan UK, explained: “We continue to respect and value the transparent connection between our people and planet initiatives. There is still work to be done, but by regularly seeking feedback from our team on how to best support them – professionally, personally and financially – we remain committed as an employer to maintaining a supportive and collaborative environment that fosters sustainable lifestyle choices and growth.
