If I'm honest, we have about three dishes that we order most often. And one of them is chicken wings! While I love our delivery chicken wing order, it's nice to know how to make your favorite meal at home. These crispy oven baked chicken wings are healthy, inexpensive, and just as delicious as takeout. You are going to love them.
Homemade chicken wings can be deep fried, oven baked or even air fried, but the recipe I'm sharing here is all about getting super crispy wings with minimal effort and no special equipment other than a baking sheet and oven. This chicken wings recipe tastes great as or with your favorite dipping sauce.

Materials
- Chicken wings – sometimes called “party wings”.
- Baking powder
- Salt and black pepper
- spice*
- Olive oil – or other cooking oil
*For seasoning, I often use a blend called “Pappy's” which I love, but you can use literally any spice blend or make your own. And if you want to keep it simple, stick with some good old Lowry's Seasoning Salt.
You may also want some sauce to toss your wings with after baking, such as: buffalo sauce, Barbecue sauceHot sauce like Frank's or any other wing sauce of your choice. If I use hot sauce, I serve them with a side of ranch dressing.
How to Bake Chicken Wings
I like to buy wings that are already segmented; Sometimes these are referred to as “party branches”. However, if needed, you can divide the chicken wings into three parts: tips (discard or use in another recipe like homemade stock), drumettes, and flats or wingets.
In a small bowl, mix together the baking powder, salt, pepper and any spices you are using. Dry the chicken pieces. Then toss them in the dry rub mixture.
Lightly oil a baking sheet and place the chicken wings in a single layer. It's okay if they touch a little, but they shouldn't overlap. Use multiple baking sheets if needed.
Bake in oven at 425°F for 20 minutes. Then flip each piece over, and brush lightly with oil. Bake for another 20 minutes (40 minutes total). Remove from baking sheet and serve hot. You can also toss them in your favorite sauce if you like, using 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup sauce.
Tips and Notes
- If you want a specific spice mix beyond salt and pepper, try this: 1/4 teaspoon seasoning salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and then 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
- I usually serve one pound of chicken wings per adult. This recipe is for two pounds so this is what my husband and I will make for dinner, along with carrots and celery for a fresh crunch on the side. 🙂
- Line your baking sheet with aluminum foil for easier cleanup.
- Not crispy to your liking? Fry them for a minute or two. I usually don't find this necessary, but every oven is a little different.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days. I will reheat in the microwave or air fryer. This works best for wings that aren't soaked in sauce.
