Meta is set to begin displaying eBay listings on its own Facebook marketplace classifieds platform in an effort to satisfy European regulators.
Back in November, Meta was fined €798 million by the European Commission (EC) in Europe for violating antitrust rules. The EC claimed that Meta had created “unfair trading conditions” by linking the Facebook marketplace to its core social network. By doing so, Meta has gained a “significant distribution advantage”, while some of its classifieds competitors also advertise their wares on Facebook – data that Meta can also use to “the sole advantage of the Facebook marketplace”.
Meta previously said it would appeal the fine, but a Bloomberg reports today notes that it will begin testing a new service that will enable Facebook Marketplace users to browse eBay listings, linking directly to eBay to complete transactions.
Curiously, Bloomberg reports that in addition to Germany and France, the test will also be launched in its home market of the US, which is outside the reach of European regulators.
