New AI-powered Samsung refrigerators will allow direct grocery ordering

Samsung is bringing grocery shopping capabilities to its artificial intelligence-enabled refrigerators.

US customers will have the ability to restock groceries “directly from the screen” of their Samsung Bespoke fridge thanks to an upcoming feature that integrates Samsung's “proprietary food recognition technology” with Instacart's product-matching application programming interface (API). Company said on Thursday.

The feature, which stems from a newly-announced “multi-year” partnership between Samsung and the online grocery service, will introduce Samsung's 2025 bespoke fridges “with different types of screens” and its “AI Vision Inside” technology.

It will be available on Samsung's older AI Family Hub + Fridge, but according to Samsung, they have food recognition technology this year as well.

The company said eligible existing models will get the feature through an over-the-network update. The schedule for this is still being worked out.

“The combination of Samsung's core technology and Instacart's outstanding online grocery shopping platform will be a great example of how the partnership can create a new level of benefits,” Samsung Electronics CEO Jeong Seung Moon said in a statement.

Samsung described the Instacart partnership as the company's “latest step in Samsung's journey to add value to the user experience by joining hands with other forward-thinking technology leaders.”

Its “AI Vision Inside” already helps track owners food in their fridge. It relies on cameras and deep-learning models to do this, according to the company.

Technology can identify More than three dozen food items, while “non-recognized food item names and expiration dates must be manually set,” according to Samsung.

Upcoming feature expansion will be “AI Vision Inside“Enables replenishment via Instacart, directly from the fridge,” it said.

When enabled, US Samsung Bespoke fridge owners will need to have a Samsung and Instacart account as well as take advantage of Wi-Fi, according to the company's press release. They must live in an area where Instacart operates.
