Founder of OpenAI Sam Altman Ring in the new year with a short missive posing questions and concerns about the future Artificial Intelligence (AI).
In his first X post of 2025, Altman published a cryptic verse on Saturday about the nearness of “the singularity,” which refers to the point at which technology becomes so advanced that it goes beyond mankind's control, potentially destroying human civilization.
“I've always wanted to write a six-word story,” Altman's post said, “here it is: close to the singularity; not sure which way.”
Trump, who has called for a ban on TikTok, wants to focus on AI in his second term
Minutes later, the tech entrepreneur revealed that the meaning of the verse was unclear even to him. Altman said the message could also be about the simulation hypothesis.
“(This is about either 1. The simulation hypothesis or 2. The impossibility of knowing when the critical moment of takeoff actually occurs, but I like that it works in many other ways as well.”), the post said. “Takeoff” probably refers to the point at which the technological singularity begins.
The simulation hypothesis, which is the theory of human existence in a computer simulation, is generally considered less realistic than the concept of technological singularity. It is considered to be more of a philosophical discussion than a scientific or political one.
Openai is back at Elon Musk's lawsuit, saying he advised the entity for profit
OpenAI was founded in 2015 by Altman and other tech entrepreneurs, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Kasturi left the company in 2018, unhappy with the company's leadership and achievements.
In 2024, Musk charged OpenAI with developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), or the ability of a machine to do anything a human can do. SpaceX founder claims OpenAI GPT-4 language model AGI achieved
OpenAI has denied that GPT-4 AGI is capable, but Altman recently hinted that it could launch in 2025.
“What are you excited about in 2025?” Y Combinator CEO Gary Tan asked Altman in a November 8 YouTube interview “What will come?”
“AGI,” Altman replied. “I'm excited about it.”
