Lung Air is set to increase the frequency of its flights between Xi'an, capital of China's Shaanxi Province, and Samarkand International Airport, gateway to Uzbekistan's historic Silk Road city. From today, flights will operate three times a week, departing from Samarkand at 13:35 local time every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.

This development marks an important step in Uzbekistan's tourism and aviation strategy, which aims to position the country as a major destination for international travelers. The route expansion reflects strong demand for air links between Uzbekistan and China, one of the fastest-recovering markets post-pandemic.

Tourism growth is accelerating

Samarkand International Airport continues to set benchmarks in passenger growth. In the first ten months of 2024 alone, the airport recorded a staggering 41% increase in passenger traffic, surpassing the total of 2023, itself a record year. Recognized by ACI Europe as the second fastest growing airport in Europe and Central Asia, the airport exemplifies Uzbekistan's wider ambitions to develop tourism and aviation.

Air Marakanda CEO Ulugbek Shamsikulov said, “Uzbekistan's aviation route network is growing rapidly due to government initiatives to stimulate tourism. “With 17 airlines operating flights to 18 destinations from Samarkand Airport, we are witnessing an unprecedented demand for direct air services. Samarkand, with its rich cultural heritage, is positioned as a hub for travelers exploring Central Asia.”

Strengthening China-Uzbekistan ties

The expanded Xi'an-Samarkand route emphasizes the growing relationship between China and Uzbekistan, which is strengthened by trade, tourism and cultural exchange. The first direct flight from China to Uzbekistan was launched in October 2023 by China Southern Airlines, connecting Urumqi and Samarkand. The new long air service has further increased accessibility, reflecting the pressing demand for travel between the two countries.

“China is an important partner of Uzbekistan in tourism and trade,” Shamsikulov added. “This expansion of Long Air demonstrates the unprecedented growth potential of the Chinese market. This is part of a larger vision to leverage Uzbekistan's tourism infrastructure and cultural resources to attract international visitors.”

Investment in world-class infrastructure

The new terminal at Samarkand International Airport, which opens in 2022, has been instrumental in supporting the city's tourism ambitions. The terminal is part of a comprehensive investment in modern facilities designed to enhance the visitor experience.

“Our success in 2024 is driven by airlines launching new routes and adding capacity to existing services,” Shamsikulov said. “We are committed to developing air links with regional and global markets, to unlock Samarkand's potential as a tourism, cultural and business hub.”
