India has introduced two special categories of visas for international students who wish to pursue higher education in the country's academic institutions.

The 'e-Student Visa' and 'e-Student-X' visas have been launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs and all applicants have to use the 'Study in India' (SII) portal launched by the government, officials said. The e-Student visa facility can be availed by eligible foreign students registered on the SII portal while the e-Student-X visa is given to dependents of e-Student visa holders, they said.

The SII portal facilitates the admission process for international students who wish to pursue long-term or short-term courses in India.

Students have to apply for visa separately at https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/ portal but the authenticity of their application will be checked by SII ID.

It is therefore mandatory for students to apply to Indian higher education institutions through the SII website, officials said.

Students can apply for the visa after receiving an admission offer letter from any of the SII partner institutes.

E-Student Visa will be issued to foreign nationals who are admitted to study in India and who are pursuing such studies, regular, full-time, graduate, post-graduate, PhD and educational institutions. Want to do other formal programs. Duly recognized by statutory and regulatory bodies in India, officials said.

Student visas are issued for up to five years depending on the duration of the course. They can also be grown in India.

Further, those with a valid e-student visa can enter India from any desired port of immigration check post, officials said.

SII is a flagship project of the Ministry of Education that hosts international students for higher education through its 600+ partner institutions offering more than 8000+ diverse courses in disciplines like Engineering & Technology, Management, Agriculture, Science, Arts & Humanities, Languages. Studies, Commerce, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing, and cover selected specialized courses like Buddhism, Paramedical Science studies, Yoga etc.

Moreover, they are available at various levels from undergraduate (Bachelor), postgraduate (Masters), doctoral level (PhD) and certification-based courses.

Due to the availability of an array of options (in courses), students have the flexibility to choose the course of their interest and study at a premier Indian institute.

Moreover, the process of getting on board with SII is relatively simple and can be done through submission of online application, admission to programs of students' choice and further processing of application for admission, officials said.

Students can start now by completing the first step of application i.e. registration by clicking on 'Register Now' tab.

Students need to fill general details like name, country, date of birth, mobile number and email id.

Every student interested in completing their higher education in India and applying to study in India must have their unique student SII ID as this ID will help them to access the dashboard, track their college and course application progress, visa/e-visa. , and other higher education in India-related processes.

A student's SII ID means no opportunity to study or travel to India, officials added.
